Recall Details and Affected Products
Kao USA, parent company of Oribe, has issued a voluntary recall for select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo after detecting Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria. The recall affects both Canada and the United States, targeting specific bottle sizes with identified UPC codes and lot numbers.
The affected products include 8.5 oz (250 ml) bottles with UPC 840035231242 and lot number YR010556, and 33.8 oz (1,000 ml) bottles with UPC 840035231273 and lot numbers YR010566 or YR010576. These bottles are sold at major retailers such as Sephora and Amazon for approximately $67, as well as through hair salons across both countries.
Health Risks and Consumer Guidance
According to Kao USA, the bacteria poses little medical risk to healthy individuals, but those with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infection. The company urges consumers to stop using the affected bottles immediately. Retailers and salons have been asked to remove the lots from shelves and return them to Kao for safe disposal.
As of July 6, 2026, Health Canada has not yet posted a recall notice. Kao stated, “We are working with the FDA to voluntarily recall the affected lots of the product in question from our warehouses. Further investigation to confirm the scope of the issue is still ongoing.”
Consumer Actions and Contact Information
Consumers with affected bottles should contact Kao at 1-800-333-2442 or email oribecomplaints@kao.com for a replacement or to report adverse events. The company has not specified the number of units affected but noted the recall is voluntary and ongoing.
