N.B. shelter honours 10,000 domestic violence survivors

Crossroads for Women, a New Brunswick shelter for women fleeing domestic violence, has launched an anniversary campaign honouring the 10,000 survivors it has served since its founding. The campaign, announced on June 30, 2026, marks a significant milestone for the organization, which provides emergency housing, counselling, and support services.

Campaign highlights survivor strength

Executive Director Renée Charron emphasized that the number 10,000 represents not just a statistic but the resilience of countless women and children. “Each survivor has a unique story of courage,” Charron said. “This campaign is about recognizing their strength and the ongoing need for safe spaces.”

The shelter, located in Moncton, has been operating for over three decades. The anniversary campaign includes public awareness events, fundraising initiatives, and a tribute wall featuring stories from survivors.

Domestic violence remains critical issue

According to Statistics Canada, police-reported intimate partner violence in New Brunswick has increased by 12% over the past five years. Crossroads for Women reports that demand for its services has risen steadily, with the shelter operating at near capacity for most of 2025 and 2026.

Charron noted that the campaign also aims to reduce stigma and encourage more survivors to seek help. “We want every woman to know that she is not alone and that support is available,” she said.

Community support and future goals

The organization has received support from local businesses, government grants, and individual donors. The anniversary campaign hopes to raise $500,000 to expand transitional housing programs and add mental health counselling services.

Crossroads for Women is one of several shelters in the province, but advocates say more resources are needed to address the root causes of domestic violence. The campaign will run through the end of 2026, with events planned across New Brunswick.
