Rare Albino Porcupine Captured on Video in New Brunswick

Residents of Upper Kingsclear, New Brunswick, were treated to a rare wildlife sighting last week when an albino porcupine was spotted roaming through their neighbourhood. Ron and Kim DeSilva managed to capture the unusual animal on video, showcasing its striking white quills and pink eyes, characteristic of albinism.

Albinism is a genetic condition that results in a lack of melanin pigment in the skin, fur, and eyes. While porcupines are common in the region, albino individuals are extremely rare, making this sighting a notable event for local wildlife enthusiasts and biologists alike.

The DeSilvas, who live in the community of Upper Kingsclear just outside Fredericton, first noticed the porcupine foraging near their property. They quickly grabbed their camera to document the encounter, sharing the footage with neighbours and local news outlets.

Wildlife experts note that albino animals often face additional challenges in the wild due to their lack of camouflage, making them more vulnerable to predators. However, this particular porcupine appeared healthy and was observed moving about normally.

Residents are advised to enjoy the sighting from a distance and avoid disturbing the animal, as porcupines are generally shy but can defend themselves with their sharp quills if threatened.
