The University of Windsor achieved a significant milestone on Saturday, giving away 1,000 trees to community members during its annual tree giveaway event. The initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability and encourage green living among residents.
Hundreds of people lined up early to receive free saplings, which included a variety of native species such as maple, oak, and pine. Volunteers from the university and local environmental groups helped distribute the trees and provided planting instructions.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and make a positive impact on our environment," said a university spokesperson. "We are thrilled to have reached the 1,000-tree mark and hope to continue this tradition for years to come."
The event also featured educational booths on tree care, composting, and urban forestry. Participants were encouraged to plant the trees in their yards, parks, or other green spaces to help increase the city's tree canopy.
Local residents expressed gratitude for the initiative. "I've been waiting for this event all year," said one attendee. "Planting a tree is a simple way to give back to nature and beautify our neighborhood."
The University of Windsor plans to host similar events in the future, with a goal of distributing even more trees to support local biodiversity and combat climate change.
