Faith Groups Can Now Apply for Affordable Housing Funding in Edmonton
Faith Groups Eligible for Affordable Housing Funding in Edmonton

The City of Edmonton has announced that funding applications are now open for faith organizations interested in building affordable housing. This initiative aims to leverage community partnerships to address the growing need for affordable homes in the city.

Program Details

Faith-based groups, including churches, mosques, synagogues, and other religious institutions, can apply for grants to develop affordable housing projects on their properties. The program provides financial support for planning, construction, and renovation of housing units that will be offered at below-market rates.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, organizations must demonstrate their capacity to manage housing projects and commit to maintaining affordability for at least 20 years. Priority will be given to projects that serve vulnerable populations, such as seniors, low-income families, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

Community Impact

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi emphasized the importance of collaboration with faith communities. “Faith organizations have deep roots in our neighborhoods and a strong commitment to social justice. By partnering with them, we can create more inclusive and sustainable communities,” he said.

Application Process

Applications are being accepted through the city’s housing department until August 31, 2026. A total of $10 million in funding is available for the first phase of the program. Successful applicants will be announced in the fall.

This initiative is part of Edmonton’s broader Affordable Housing Strategy, which aims to create 5,000 new affordable housing units by 2030. The city hopes that engaging faith organizations will accelerate progress toward this goal while fostering community-led development.
