Heavy rain caused chaos on most major highways in the Greater Toronto Area on Thursday morning, leading to multiple collisions and lane closures. The downpour, which began early in the morning, created hazardous driving conditions across the region.
Highway 400 Blocked at Langstaff Road
Multiple northbound lanes of Highway 400 were blocked at Langstaff Road in Vaughan due to a collision. Emergency crews were on scene, and drivers were advised to seek alternative routes. The extent of injuries was not immediately known.
Widespread Flooding and Delays
The heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems, causing ponding on roadways and reducing visibility. Toronto police reported numerous fender-benders and vehicles stranded in standing water. Commuters faced significant delays during the morning rush hour.
Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement for the region, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The storm system is expected to move eastward later in the day, with improving conditions by evening.
Safety Advice for Drivers
Authorities urged motorists to slow down, turn on headlights, and maintain a safe following distance. Drivers were also reminded never to attempt to drive through flooded roads, as water levels can rise quickly and pose a serious risk.
Cleanup and recovery operations are underway. No major injuries have been reported so far, but officials caution that conditions remain treacherous.
