As Ottawa weather heats up, Ottawa Fire Services is reminding residents to stay safe in and on the water. With more people heading to beaches, rivers, and pools, the risk of drowning and water-related incidents increases. Here are key tips to keep you and your family safe this summer.
Wear a Life Jacket
Always wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Even strong swimmers can be caught off guard by cold water or currents. Ensure your life jacket is approved by Transport Canada.
Supervise Children Closely
Never leave children unattended near water. Designate a responsible adult to watch kids at all times, and avoid distractions like phones or socializing. Drowning can happen quickly and silently.
Know the Water Conditions
Check weather forecasts and water temperatures before heading out. Cold water can cause hypothermia even in summer. Avoid swimming in areas with strong currents or sudden drop-offs.
Learn CPR and Basic Rescue Skills
Taking a CPR course can save lives. In an emergency, call 911 immediately and if trained, begin rescue breaths and chest compressions. Ottawa Fire Services offers community training sessions.
Avoid Alcohol and Drugs
Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination. Consuming alcohol while swimming or boating significantly increases the risk of accidents. Stay sober to stay safe.
Use the Buddy System
Never swim alone. Always have a buddy who can help in case of an emergency. This is especially important in remote or unsupervised areas.
Secure Home Pools and Hot Tubs
If you have a pool or hot tub, install a fence with a self-latching gate and cover when not in use. Remove toys from the water to avoid attracting children.
