Two Fallen N.W.T. Wildfire Fighters Identified

The two Northwest Territories wildfire fighters who died battling a blaze near Fort Providence have been identified. Their families expressed profound grief, calling the loss a 'wound that cannot be repaired'. The Canadian Press reported the identifications on July 9, 2026.

Victims Named by Officials

The deceased were named as Adam Yakeleya, 34, and Sarah-Lynn Hardisty, 29. Both were experienced members of the N.W.T. Wildfire Service. They died on July 7 while fighting a fire that had grown rapidly due to dry conditions and high winds.

Family and Community Mourn

In a statement, Yakeleya's family said, 'Adam was a dedicated firefighter who loved his community and his work. This is a wound that cannot be repaired.' Hardisty's family described her as 'a brave and caring woman who always put others first.' The community of Fort Providence held a vigil on July 8.
