The City of Ottawa has temporarily closed Lalande Conservation Park in Orléans and increased safety measures following a reported coyote attack on a 14-year-old boy. The incident occurred days before the closure, which took effect on Tuesday.
Park Closure and Response Efforts
The closure allows city staff to coordinate with provincial authorities and wildlife experts to explore management options. The park, located near Nantes Street and Portobello Boulevard, will remain closed until response operations are complete.
Safety Measures and Public Advisories
Trail cameras will be installed in the area, and bylaw officers are advising residents to avoid the park and surrounding green space. The city urges the public not to approach or attack coyotes and to report concerning behavior through 3-1-1.
Relocation options have been reviewed but are restricted under Ontario's wildlife regulations. The city is in discussions with the provincial government about potential exemptions. Contingency plans are being prepared if relocation is not approved.
"Protecting public safety remains the City's priority as it responds to a complex situation in a residential area where people, pets and wildlife are in close proximity," the city stated.
