Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg cancelled its Wednesday matinee performance of Jesus Christ Superstar due to extreme heat, the theatre announced. The decision was made to prioritize the safety of audience members and cast amid a heat wave that has gripped southern Manitoba.
Heat Prompts Show Cancellation
The outdoor venue in Kildonan Park said the matinee, scheduled for July 12, 2026, was called off because of dangerously high temperatures. The show was to begin at 2 p.m., when the heat index was expected to peak.
“The health and safety of our patrons, cast, and crew is our top priority,” said a Rainbow Stage spokesperson. “We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to reschedule the performance.”
Heat Wave Hits Manitoba
Environment Canada issued heat warnings for much of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, with daytime highs reaching 35 C and humidex values making it feel like 42 C. The extreme heat is expected to persist through the weekend.
Manitobans are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat, and check on vulnerable neighbours. The province has opened cooling centres in several communities.
Rainbow Stage Season Continues
Evening performances of Jesus Christ Superstar are still scheduled as planned, with temperatures expected to cool after sunset. The theatre is monitoring conditions closely and will announce any further changes.
“We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we navigate this heat event,” the spokesperson added. Ticket holders for the cancelled matinee will be contacted about options for refunds or exchanges.
