B.C. Hydro Sets Record for May Electricity Demand Amid Early Heat Wave
B.C. Hydro May Electricity Demand Record Amid Heat Wave

British Columbia's electric utility, B.C. Hydro, has reported that an early-season heat wave pushed electricity demand to a new record for the month of May. The peak hourly demand occurred on Monday, reaching 7,600 megawatts, the highest level ever recorded in May, especially so early in the month.

Record Demand and Utility Response

The Crown utility stated in a news release Tuesday that the demand spike was driven by widespread use of air conditioning as temperatures soared. Despite the surge, B.C. Hydro emphasized that its clean electricity grid managed the load effectively. The record is expected to stand as temperatures are forecast to drop by Wednesday.

While the demand is significant for May, it remains lower than peak winter usage. The utility attributed the increase partly to the growing number of air conditioners in the province, with nearly 70 per cent of households now owning some form of cooling equipment. This trend reflects the rising frequency of hotter summers.
