A tornado touched down at Dillberry Lake Provincial Campground near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border on Wednesday night, leaving several campers hospitalized, according to officials.
Campers Hospitalized After Tornado Strikes
The tornado struck the campground, located about 30 kilometres east of Lloydminster, around 8:30 p.m. local time on July 8, 2026. Emergency crews responded to reports of damage and injuries at the site, which is popular with outdoor enthusiasts.
Alberta Health Services confirmed that multiple campers were transported to hospital with injuries. The exact number of injured and the severity of their conditions have not yet been released. Officials say the tornado caused significant damage to tents, RVs, and vehicles in the area.
Weather Warnings and Aftermath
Environment Canada had issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of east-central Alberta earlier in the day, but no tornado warning was in effect at the time of the touchdown. The storm system moved rapidly through the region, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds.
Local RCMP and emergency services conducted a search of the campground to ensure no one was trapped or missing. Power lines were downed in the area, and crews worked through the night to restore electricity and clear debris.
“This was a terrifying experience for campers,” said a spokesperson for the campground. “We are grateful that no lives were lost, and we are focusing on supporting those affected.”
Impact on Campers and Community
The tornado struck during peak camping season, with the campground nearly full. Witnesses described a loud roar as the tornado approached, followed by debris flying through the air. Some campers sought shelter in washrooms and vehicles.
One camper, who asked not to be named, said, “We heard the wind picking up and then everything went dark. We huddled in our car as the tent flew away. It was over in minutes, but it felt like hours.”
The provincial government has offered resources to help with cleanup and recovery. A reception centre has been set up at a nearby community hall to provide information and assistance to displaced campers.
