Taan Forest Becomes Canada's First FSC Verified Impact Forest
Taan Forest: Canada's First FSC Verified Impact Forest

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has launched its innovative FSC Verified Impact program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to transparently measure and report positive outcomes from certified forests. This collaborative framework enables producers, brands, retailers, financial institutions, and governments to access and disclose high-integrity forest data across entire value chains. By investing in monitoring and improvement projects within FSC-certified forests, sponsors obtain verified evidence and compelling narratives that demonstrate the tangible, measurable impacts of their investments on forest ecosystems and local communities.

Historic Achievement for Indigenous Forestry

Among the program's inaugural verified projects worldwide, Taan Forest has emerged as a trailblazer, becoming the first in Canada to achieve FSC Verified Impact status. Owned by the Council of the Haida Nation, this forest management enterprise is not only pioneering the program nationally but is also among the first globally to receive verification specifically for enhancing Indigenous cultural values. This milestone powerfully illustrates how FSC certification can credibly demonstrate positive outcomes for biodiversity, cultural heritage, and community-led stewardship.

Transformation of Forest Management

Taan Forest manages two extensive forest licences encompassing more than 190,000 hectares on Haida Gwaii, the ancestral homelands of the Haida Nation. Historically, these forests were subjected to high-intensity industrial logging practices. However, following the implementation of the Haida Gwaii Land Use Objectives Order in 2010 and Taan's initial FSC certification in 2011, management has fundamentally shifted toward a values-based stewardship model. The newly verified ecosystem services impacts now provide third-party confirmation, under the FSC framework, that Taan's innovative management approach is delivering measurable ecological and cultural benefits.

"Taan Forest is immensely proud to be one of the first Indigenous organizations worldwide under FSC to pursue verification for the enhancement of cultural values," stated Leticia Hill, Chief Executive Officer of HaiCo. "As a Xaayda Haida owned company, Taan Forest strives to be a leader in forest management, consistently incorporating cultural values and conservation principles into all our practices."

Verified Ecosystem Services Impacts

Through this rigorous verification process, Taan Forest has demonstrated two significant ecosystem services impacts:

  1. Enhancement of an Ecologically Sufficient Conservation Areas Network
  2. Enhancement of Culturally Valued Populations or Species

Conservation Achievements Over 15 Years

Over the past decade and a half, Taan has meticulously developed a comprehensive Conservation Areas Network that includes wildlife habitat reserves, aquatic buffers, cedar stewardship areas, and cultural feature reserves. These protected zones significantly strengthen ecological connectivity across Xaydaa Gwaay.yaay, complementing Haida Gwaii's broader system of co-managed parks and Protected Areas, including Haida Heritage Sites and conservancies.

The verified outcomes are substantial, encompassing more than 44,000 hectares of dedicated conservation area and improved habitat conditions for several key species. These include the Taan Haida Gwaii Black Bear, the Ts'allang.nga Marbled Murrelet, and the Stads K'un Northern Goshawk. This achievement represents a remarkable fusion of traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation science, creating a model for sustainable forestry that respects both biodiversity and Indigenous cultural heritage.
