Saskatchewan residents are being reminded to take necessary precautions as black bears emerge from hibernation across the province. The Government of Saskatchewan issued a statement urging people to be vigilant and proactive in reducing potential conflicts with the animals.
Safety Tips for Residents
Officials recommend securing garbage, removing bird feeders, and cleaning grills after use to avoid attracting bears. Residents should also keep pets on leashes and make noise while hiking to avoid surprising bears.
What to Do in an Encounter
If you encounter a black bear, do not run. Back away slowly while facing the bear, and make yourself look larger by raising your arms. Use bear spray if the bear approaches aggressively. Report any bear sightings in urban areas to local authorities.
The province notes that most bears are not aggressive and will avoid humans if given space. However, early spring is a critical time as bears search for food after hibernation.
