Thousands of Maritimers gathered on July 1, 2026, to mark Canada’s 159th birthday with parades, fireworks, and community festivities. In Quispamsis, New Brunswick, celebrations drew large crowds despite heat warnings and the threat of severe thunderstorms across the region.
Parades and Festivities Draw Crowds
Canada Day events were held in communities throughout the Maritimes, including parades in Quispamsis and other towns. The celebrations featured live music, family activities, and fireworks displays. In Saskatoon, the Nutana Legion hosted its first-ever Canada Day celebration, while thousands attended the annual event in Wascana Park, Regina.
“It’s a day to come together and celebrate our country,” said a spokesperson for the Quispamsis event. “Despite the weather, the turnout has been fantastic.”
Weather Challenges
Environment Canada issued heat warnings for much of the Maritimes, with humidex values reaching near 42 in some areas. The heat and humidity also fueled a risk of severe thunderstorms, which could bring heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning. Power outages were reported in several locations, and officials urged residents to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The extreme weather also affected other parts of Canada. In Southern Ontario, temperatures soared under an extreme heat warning, prompting Toronto to cancel FIFA World Cup broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square. In British Columbia, flooding from a burst glacial lake was expected to peak, with evacuation orders remaining in place.
Other Notable Events
Canada Day also saw a variety of incidents and news across the country. In Oshawa, a female was stabbed after a dispute over a parking spot. In Winnipeg, a senior was arrested after fleeing a bank robbery in a taxi. In the Montreal area, a man who allegedly cut off his monitoring bracelet was arrested in Ontario. The RCMP in New Brunswick is trying to identify men suspected of driving a car into the Charlo River.
Two seismic events of magnitude 2.6 were recorded in northeastern Canada on Canada Day. Ontario Forest Fires reported two new wildland fires in the northeast region, bringing the total active fires to 21. A portion of Highway 402 westbound lanes was closed due to unsafe conditions.
In entertainment news, Canadian rocker Bryan Adams released a protest song titled “51st State,” and former pop star was charged with sexual offences dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. The Oxford English Dictionary added new Canadian-inspired words in a recent update.
Overall, Maritimers celebrated Canada’s 159th birthday with enthusiasm, despite the weather challenges and other incidents across the country.
