A young man from Quebec was rescued by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department after falling approximately 50 feet (15 meters) on Mount Washington. The incident occurred on June 29, 2026, and the rescue was completed the same day.
Details of the Fall
The victim, whose name has not been released, was hiking on the mountain when he slipped and fell down a steep, rocky section. He sustained serious injuries, including a possible head injury and fractures. The fall happened near the Tuckerman Ravine trail, a popular but challenging route.
According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the man was part of a group of hikers. After the fall, other hikers provided immediate assistance and called 911. The department dispatched a rescue team, including a helicopter, to extract the victim.
Rescue Operation
The rescue team used a helicopter to hoist the man from the rocky terrain. He was then transported to a hospital in Berlin, New Hampshire, for treatment. His condition was reported as serious but stable.
“The victim was lucky that other hikers were nearby and able to call for help quickly,” said a spokesperson for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. “Mount Washington is known for its unpredictable weather and treacherous terrain, and falls can be fatal.”
Mount Washington Dangers
Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States, is notorious for extreme weather and hazardous hiking conditions. The mountain has recorded some of the highest wind speeds on Earth, and temperatures can drop rapidly even in summer. Hikers are advised to be well-prepared and check weather conditions before attempting any trails.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with mountain hiking. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department urges all hikers to carry proper gear, including a map, compass, first aid kit, and communication device.
