Manitoulin Transport has been recognized for its 40-year partnership with Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada's mobile Eye Van, a service that brings essential eye care to remote communities in Northern Ontario. The company was honored for its ongoing support of the Eye Van, which travels to underserved areas to provide vision assessments and treatments.
A Lifeline on Wheels
The Eye Van has been a crucial resource for Northern Ontario residents who lack easy access to optometrists. Manitoulin Transport's logistical support has enabled the van to reach hundreds of communities annually, performing thousands of eye exams. The partnership began in 1986 and has since expanded to include multiple vehicles and advanced diagnostic equipment.
Community Impact
Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada estimates that the Eye Van has served over 150,000 patients since its inception. For many, it is the only opportunity to receive professional eye care. The program also helps detect conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy early, preventing vision loss.
At a ceremony in Sudbury, Manitoulin Transport executives received a plaque commemorating the milestone. "This partnership reflects our commitment to the health and well-being of Northern Ontarians," said a company spokesperson.
Future Plans
Both organizations plan to continue and potentially expand the service. With advancements in telemedicine, the Eye Van may soon offer remote consultations, further bridging the gap in rural healthcare.
