High Winds Trigger Widespread Power Outages Across Ottawa
Strong winds and an overnight snowstorm have resulted in significant power disruptions for thousands of residents in Ottawa. On Tuesday morning, Hydro Ottawa reported that approximately 11,000 customers were without electricity as severe weather conditions swept through the city.
Weather Conditions and Impact
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement, noting that westerly winds reached speeds of 45 km/h with gusts up to 65 km/h at the airport. These winds were expected to gradually diminish throughout the day, with gusts forecasted to drop to 50 km/h in the afternoon and 40 km/h overnight. The agency also warned of lake-effect flurries from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, which could cause brief periods of reduced visibility due to blowing snow, although significant snowfall accumulations were not anticipated.
The combination of snow and high winds has led to multiple outages across various neighborhoods, affecting both residential and commercial areas. Hydro Ottawa has mobilized crews to address the outages as safely and quickly as possible, but restoration efforts are being hampered by the ongoing adverse weather.
Response and Community Effects
Hydro Ottawa has been actively communicating with the public through its website and social media channels. In a post on X, the utility company alerted customers to the outages and provided multiple ways to report power losses, including online, via a mobile app, by texting "OUT" to a designated number, or by calling their outage line.
The outages have had tangible impacts on local services, including at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, which is located within one of the affected west-end zones. Some patients have had their appointments rescheduled due to the power disruptions, highlighting the broader community consequences of the weather event.
Residents are advised to stay updated on restoration progress and take necessary precautions during this period of instability. As crews continue their work, the focus remains on restoring power to all affected customers while ensuring safety in the face of lingering wind and snow conditions.
