Firefighters found themselves in an unusual battle Wednesday evening: combating a fire at their own station. Crews from Redwood Meadows and neighbouring jurisdictions responded to a blaze that erupted inside the Redwood Meadows fire station, located approximately 40 kilometres southwest of Calgary.
Emergency Response to Station Fire
The incident began shortly after 5:00 p.m. on December 17, 2025. Redwood Meadows Emergency Services issued an alert to residents at around 5:15 p.m., notifying them that a fire had broken out in the back hall of the townsite's fire station. The facility is situated along Highway 22 in the Bragg Creek area.
Given the location of the fire, mutual aid was immediately requested. Crews from Rocky View Fire Services were called in to assist Redwood Meadows firefighters in tackling the flames. By 5:35 p.m., emergency officials reported that the back hall was "fully involved" with fire as crews worked to contain it.
Multi-Agency Effort Brings Fire Under Control
The response was a coordinated effort involving several agencies beyond the fire departments. Tsuut'ina Police, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and utility company ATCO were all on site to support operations. Their combined efforts proved effective.
The fire was declared under control by approximately 6:00 p.m. However, firefighters continued their work to fully extinguish the blaze. As of 6:50 p.m., crews were still actively working on the scene. The department confirmed the fire was extinguished by 7:05 p.m., though crews remained on site to monitor and address any potential "hot spots."
Impacts on Local Services and Residents
The fire and the emergency response had immediate consequences for local residents. During the firefighting efforts, the Townsite of Redwood Meadows issued a critical notice advising residents to stop all non-essential water use. This was due to a low reservoir level at the local water plant, likely caused by the demand from firefighting operations.
Furthermore, the fire caused collateral damage to nearby infrastructure. In a Facebook post, the townsite reported that Eastlink equipment located beside the burned building was damaged. As a result, residents were advised to expect disruptions to their internet and television services for several days while repairs are completed.
The cause of the fire at the Redwood Meadows fire station is not yet known, and the story may be updated as more information becomes available from investigators.
