Coyote Den Decommissioned; Lalande Park Reopens

Lalande Conservation Park in Orléans has reopened after a coyote den was decommissioned, according to an announcement by the City of Ottawa. The park had been closed since June 6, 2026, following reports of aggressive coyote behavior near the den.

Den Decommissioning Process

The city worked with wildlife experts to safely remove the coyote den. The process involved monitoring the area and ensuring no coyotes were present before dismantling the den. Officials stated that the den was decommissioned to prevent future conflicts between coyotes and park visitors.

“The safety of residents and visitors is our top priority,” said a city spokesperson. “We are pleased that the park can now reopen for public enjoyment.”

Background on the Closure

The park was closed after multiple incidents of coyotes approaching people and displaying aggressive behavior. Signs warning of coyotes were posted, and the public was advised to avoid the area. The closure affected recreational activities such as hiking, dog walking, and bird watching.

According to the city, there were no reported injuries from the coyote encounters, but the decision to close the park was made out of an abundance of caution.

Park Reopening and Safety Measures

The park is now open to the public with enhanced signage reminding visitors to keep a safe distance from wildlife and to keep dogs on leash. The city encourages residents to report any further coyote sightings or aggressive behavior.

“We remind everyone to never feed wildlife and to secure garbage and pet food,” added the spokesperson.

The decommissioning of the den is part of ongoing efforts to manage urban wildlife in Ottawa. The city has a coyote management plan that includes public education, habitat modification, and, when necessary, removal of problem animals.
