Original Champlain Bridge Deconstruction Earns Envision Gold Certification
Champlain Bridge Deconstruction Wins Envision Gold

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) has announced that the deconstruction project of the original Champlain Bridge has achieved Envision Gold certification. This international award, granted by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), recognizes excellence in sustainable infrastructure. The certification followed a rigorous independent evaluation of 64 criteria, including quality of life, leadership in management and planning, resource allocation, the natural world, and infrastructure resilience.

Project Components

The deconstruction project included multiple elements: the actual deconstruction work, environmental protection measures, material recovery initiatives, 12 research and development projects, public outreach efforts, and the redevelopment of the land freed up by the bridge removal, known as the Héritage Champlain Pathway. This recognition underscores the sustained efforts by the JCCBI team to enhance social, economic, and environmental benefits for the community.

Government and Leadership Reactions

The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, praised the achievement, stating, "The Government of Canada applauds JCCBI’s excellent work and will continue to support initiatives that reduce our environmental footprint and build a greener, more resilient Canada."

Sandra Martel, JCCBI’s Chief Executive Officer, noted, "Obtaining Envision Gold recognition demonstrates our commitment to incorporating sustainable development principles at every stage of implementation. This project is a concrete example of how clear vision and meticulous planning can reduce environmental impacts and contribute to a positive legacy."

Anthony Kane, President & CEO of ISI, added, "This project demonstrates how former bridge infrastructure can be thoughtfully deconstructed, with materials reused and the landscape restored. The Héritage Champlain Pathway sets a model for sustainable infrastructure, advancing active transportation goals while creating welcoming public spaces."

Innovative Practices

The deconstruction of the 3.4 km original Champlain Bridge, located in a sensitive urban and aquatic environment, integrated innovative and responsible practices. Notable achievements include extensive environmental protections, high material recovery rates, and the transformation of the site into a public pathway that improves access to the St. Lawrence River.
