Brandon Issues Evacuation Notices as Flood Prep Continues Amid Heavy Rain
Brandon Issues Evacuation Notices as Flood Prep Continues

The City of Brandon has issued evacuation notices for several areas as flood preparation efforts continue following days of relentless rain. The local golf course is already submerged, with water levels rising and threatening nearby properties.

Evacuation Orders Issued

Officials in Brandon are urging residents in flood-prone zones to leave immediately as water levels continue to climb. The evacuation notices apply to low-lying areas near the Assiniboine River, which has swelled due to the persistent precipitation. Emergency crews are on standby to assist with evacuations and sandbagging operations.

According to the city’s emergency management office, the rain has saturated the ground, leading to rapid runoff and rising river levels. The golf course, a popular local landmark, is now under several feet of water, as seen in photos taken on July 6 by Harrison Shin of CTV News Winnipeg.

Widespread Impacts Across Manitoba

The flooding is not limited to Brandon. Across southwestern Manitoba, farmers and residents are reeling from the storm’s devastation. One strawberry farm reported unprecedented rainfall, with the owner stating, “We’ve never seen rain like this,” describing the damage as obliterated crops and ruined fields.

Residents in rural areas are also struggling with flooded basements and damaged infrastructure. A 90-year-old Ottawa man whose basement was destroyed by flooding noted that his insurance would not cover the damage, highlighting the financial strain on homeowners.

Flood Preparation Efforts

Local authorities are coordinating with provincial emergency services to deploy sandbags, pumps, and other flood barriers. The city has set up a reception center for evacuees at the Brandon Community Sportsplex. Residents are advised to monitor official channels for updates and to prepare emergency kits with essentials.

The continuous rain has also raised concerns about further flooding in the coming days, as forecasts predict additional showers and thunderstorms. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the region, warning of potential severe thunderstorms and localized flooding.
