A 1963 time capsule was unearthed during the demolition of the former Sault Ste. Marie hospital, officials confirmed Wednesday. The capsule, discovered by construction crews, contained a newspaper, hospital pamphlets, meeting minutes, and medals, offering a snapshot of the community nearly 63 years ago.

The time capsule was found within the walls of the old hospital building, which has been undergoing demolition to make way for new development. According to a spokesperson for the demolition project, the metal box was sealed and showed minimal damage. Inside, workers found a 1963 edition of the Sault Star newspaper, pamphlets detailing hospital services, minutes from hospital board meetings, and several commemorative medals.
“It’s a remarkable find that connects us directly to the past,” said the spokesperson. “The items are in remarkable condition and provide a unique perspective on healthcare and community life in the early 1960s.”
Plans for the Artifacts
Local historians and museum officials were contacted to assess the artifacts. The Sault Ste. Marie Museum expressed interest in acquiring the items for public display. “These materials are invaluable for understanding the hospital’s role in the community,” said a museum curator. “We hope to exhibit them as part of a local history collection.”
The demolition project is part of a broader redevelopment plan for the site, which has been vacant since the hospital moved to a new facility in 2019. The discovery of the time capsule has added a layer of historical significance to the project.
Community Reaction
Residents have reacted with nostalgia and excitement. Many took to social media to share memories of the old hospital. “My mother worked there in the 1970s,” one user wrote. “It’s wonderful that a piece of that history has been preserved.”
No further time capsules are expected to be found, but crews remain vigilant as demolition continues. The city has not announced a permanent home for the artifacts, but discussions with the museum are ongoing.
