Ottawa Air Quality Warning: Wildfire Smoke Causes Hazy Conditions

Hazy conditions blanketed Ottawa on Saturday afternoon as Environment Canada issued a yellow-level air quality warning due to wildfire smoke drifting into the region. The warning, which indicates moderate risk, advises residents to reduce outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory conditions.

GO Transit Cancellations

GO Transit cancelled more than a dozen train trips on Saturday, citing the poor air quality and reduced visibility caused by the smoke. Commuters were advised to check for updates before traveling, as additional cancellations or delays were possible.

The smoke originated from active wildfires in northern Ontario and Quebec, according to Environment Canada. Winds carried the fine particulate matter southward, affecting air quality across the Ottawa area.

Health Precautions

Health officials recommend staying indoors with windows closed, using air purifiers if available, and limiting strenuous outdoor exercise. Those with asthma, heart disease, or other chronic conditions should be particularly cautious.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips stated, "The smoke can cause reduced visibility and health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. We expect conditions to improve by Sunday as winds shift."

As of Saturday afternoon, air quality health index readings in Ottawa ranged from 4 to 6, indicating moderate to high risk. The warning is expected to remain in effect until Sunday morning.
