Thousands of Albanians took to the streets of Tirana on Saturday to protest against a planned luxury construction project linked to U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Protesters decry environmental and corruption risks
The proposed resort, situated along the Albanian Riviera, has sparked outrage among local activists and residents who argue it will damage pristine coastal areas and exacerbate political cronyism. According to protest organizer Elda Gjika of the environmental group Green Albania, the project 'represents everything wrong with unchecked foreign investment.'
Albanian police estimated the crowd at around 5,000, though organizers claimed numbers were higher. Demonstrators carried signs reading 'Save Our Coast' and 'No to Kleptocracy,' and chanted slogans against Kushner and the Albanian government.
Kushner's involvement draws scrutiny
Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and former senior advisor, has been linked to the resort through investment firm Affinity Partners, which he founded. The firm has secured backing from foreign investors, including from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Critics argue the project benefits from political connections rather than transparent bidding.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the development, stating it will create jobs and boost tourism. However, opposition lawmakers have called for a parliamentary inquiry, alleging the deal bypassed environmental assessments.

The protest is part of a wider backlash against large-scale tourism projects in Albania, a country seeking to attract foreign investment while balancing environmental preservation. Similar demonstrations have occurred in recent months against other developments along the Ionian coast.
According to a report by local NGO Coastal Protection, the resort area is home to several endangered species, including the loggerhead sea turtle. Environmentalists warn that construction could disrupt nesting sites and water quality.
