Blue-green algae bloom at Isle Lake prompts water advisory

Alberta Health Services has issued a water advisory for Isle Lake due to a blue-green algae bloom. The advisory warns residents and visitors to avoid swimming, wading, or drinking the water, and to keep pets away from the lake. Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that cause skin irritation, sore throat, headache, and nausea in humans, and can be fatal to animals.

Details of the Advisory

The advisory applies to Isle Lake, located about 70 kilometers west of Edmonton. AHS advises that anyone who comes into contact with the water should wash with clean water as soon as possible. Fish from the lake should not be consumed, as toxins can accumulate in their tissues. The advisory will remain in effect until the bloom dissipates, which typically occurs when water temperatures cool in the fall.

Health Risks and Precautions

Blue-green algae blooms are common in Alberta during the summer months, especially in warm, shallow, and nutrient-rich waters. According to AHS, symptoms from exposure include red skin, eye irritation, and gastrointestinal issues. People with weakened immune systems, children, and pregnant women are at higher risk. Residents are urged to report any suspected blooms to Alberta Environment and Parks.
