Lionel Richie rebounds from health woes to triumph in Toronto concert
Lionel Richie triumphs in Toronto after health scare

Lionel Richie made a triumphant return to the stage at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night, July 4, 2026, after a health scare that disrupted the opening of his co-headlining tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. The 77-year-old R&B icon, who had been hospitalized following dizziness during the tour's first show, delivered a high-energy performance that earned a rating of three and a half stars out of four.

Health struggles and honest recovery

Richie openly addressed his recent health issues during the concert, even drinking Pedialyte on stage to maintain his sugar and electrolyte levels after dehydration was reported as the cause of his earlier collapse. "I could do a commercial for Pedialyte," he joked, after opening the night with hits like Hello and Running With the Night.

The tour's opening night on June 24 in Minnesota saw Richie experience dizziness during Dancing On The Ceiling, forcing him to end the show after about an hour and leading to a hospital stay. He subsequently postponed two dates in Chicago and Columbus on June 26 and 27, before resuming performances in Pittsburgh on June 30.

Fan interactions and humorous remedies

Richie shared amusing anecdotes about fan advice he received after his health scare. "Strange things happened to me last week," he said. "I learned something. All you have to do is just get sick — one time — and all of your fans they have a remedy to what’s wrong with me." He recounted a female fan who suggested he had hit his "best-before date," saying, "Lionel, these things happen to you when you turn 80! I’m NOT 80!" Another fan recommended a scooter for him to ride across the stage, while a third suggested putting castor oil behind his ears.

Despite the heat from his leather jackets, which he changed multiple times during the show, Richie and his five-piece band delivered a crowd-pleasing set filled with hits. The setlist included solo classics like You Are, Dancing on the Ceiling, Truly, Say You, Say Me, and All Night Long, as well as duets such as Lady with a virtual Kenny Rogers and Endless Love with the female audience members subbing for Diana Ross. The ensemble USA For Africa song We Are the World also made an appearance.

Commodores material and tribute

Richie's Commodores material, including Easy, Sail On, and Three Times a Lady, received a strong response. He performed these songs on a white piano with a clear top that lit up with tiny lights, matching the illuminated steps on his stage. A dance medley of Fancy Dancer, Sweet Love, and Lady (You Bring Me Up) preceded the grand finale, Brick House.

At the end of the night, Richie dedicated the concert and the tour to Commodores bassist-co-founder Ronald LePread, who died at age 75 on May 30.

Earth, Wind & Fire co-headline set

Co-headliners Earth, Wind & Fire, featuring original members Verdine White (74), Philip Bailey (75), and Ralph Johnson (75), delivered an hour-long set that opened with Shining Star and included hits like Serpentine Fire, Sing a Song, a cover of The Beatles' Got to Get You Into My Life, and That’s the Way of the World. The show-ending trio of Boogie Wonderland, Let’s Groove, and September finally got the audience on its feet and staying there.
