Calgary's Sunglaciers Look to History and Philosophy for Inspiration on Fourth Album
Calgary's innovative musical ensemble, Sunglaciers, has embarked on a profound creative journey for their fourth studio album, Spiritual Content. Rather than indulging in simple introspection, the band has delved into historical narratives and philosophical concepts to craft their nine compelling tracks.
Historical Figures as Musical Muse
The album opens with Dead Stop, a synth-pop composition that explores the theme of dedicating oneself to a life purpose. This track draws inspiration from the late American rapper J Dilla, whose legendary commitment to his craft serves as a powerful creative catalyst.
Future Free channels dream-pop aesthetics with ethereal vocals, paying homage to Emily Roebling, the remarkable historical figure who completed the Brooklyn Bridge project in 1883 after her husband, the chief engineer, became incapacitated. Roebling's groundbreaking achievement as the first female field engineer provides rich thematic material for the band's musical exploration.
The album continues with Ballad for Eddy, featuring skittering drumbeats and haunting vocals that reference Electric Avenue while celebrating 78-year-old Guiana-born Calypso-pop fusionist Eddy Grant. Grant's journey from Guyana to London at age twelve, where he revolutionized the music scene through sheer determination, exemplifies the resilience theme that permeates the album.
Philosophical Underpinnings
When Sunglaciers do turn inward for self-examination, as on the post-punk track Intentions, they still ground their lyrics in substantial research. Drummer and co-songwriter Mathieu Blanchard immersed himself in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, drawing from the second-century Roman emperor's Stoic philosophy.
"It's a classic text about accepting circumstances as they come, managing morning anxiety, and maintaining perspective without letting external factors control your inner state," explains Blanchard. "The philosophy emphasizes introspection while engaging with the world on balanced terms."
A Shift in Narrative Approach
Vocalist and guitarist Evan Resnik highlights the album's distinctive narrative evolution: "We consciously moved toward story-based compositions rather than purely introspective pieces. Our earlier records focused more on personal feelings, but this album tells other people's stories through our unique musical lens."
The band members emphasize how each inspirational figure—from J Dilla's basement sample-cutting dedication to Emily Roebling's engineering breakthrough and Eddy Grant's genre-defying perseverance—demonstrates remarkable resilience against systemic challenges.
