British pop star Harry Styles has solidified his position as one of the world's most prominent musicians, a decade after his rise to fame with One Direction. Known for his magnetic stage presence and modern take on masculinity, Styles is set to launch a new tour following the release of his fourth album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.
From Boy Band to Solo Stardom
Styles was discovered at age 16 on The X Factor and became a member of One Direction, which also included Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne. The band sold nearly 70 million records before going on hiatus in 2016. Unlike many former boy band members, Styles has never spoken negatively about his time with the group, which helped him retain a massive fanbase.
His self-titled debut album in 2017 was followed by Fine Line in 2019, featuring the hit Watermelon Sugar. The album Harry's House (2022) won Album of the Year at the Grammys, and his Love On Tour (2021–2023) cemented his reputation as a dynamic performer.
New Album and Tour
Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally was released on March 6 and topped charts in over 20 countries, including the UK, France, and the US. The tour begins Saturday in Amsterdam and includes a record 12 shows at London's Wembley Stadium in June, a 30-date residency at New York's Madison Square Garden from late August, and a finale in Sydney in December.
Fashion and Cultural Impact
Styles has become a style icon, known for gender-fluid fashion. In 2020, he was the first man to appear solo on the cover of US Vogue, wearing a Gucci lace dress and a crinoline skirt. His outfits often draw comparisons to David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, who also pushed gender boundaries.
While Styles has not publicly labeled his sexuality, he has faced accusations of queerbaiting. He has only confirmed relationships with women, including actress Zoe Kravitz, to whom he is reportedly engaged.
Activism and Academic Recognition
Styles has become more outspoken on political issues, encouraging young Americans to vote and supporting LGBTQ causes. Louie Valencia, a humanities professor at Texas State University, notes that Styles aims to bring hope and kindness to a skeptical world. Valencia will teach a summer course at Oxford titled Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity.
In an interview with The Times, Styles expressed excitement about the upcoming tour, saying, “When I listen back to the album, I can hear that I was having fun during this time. It’s fulfilling to make something you’re proud of.”
