'Toy Story 5' Shatters Box Office Records with $160 Million Debut
'Toy Story 5' has stormed into theaters with a staggering $160 million opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing debut of 2026 and the biggest launch in the franchise's history, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The animated sequel, which reunites Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, surpassed the previous franchise best of $120 million set by 'Toy Story 4' in 2019. The film's opening also topped the year's previous record holder, 'Dune: Part Three,' which opened with $145 million in March.
Global Success and Critical Acclaim
Internationally, 'Toy Story 5' added $180 million, bringing its global total to $340 million. The film earned an A+ CinemaScore from audiences and holds a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its emotional depth and stunning animation.
"We're thrilled that audiences have embraced this next chapter of Woody and Buzz's journey," said a Disney spokesperson. "The response has been overwhelming."
Record-Breaking Weekend for Disney
The debut marks Disney's biggest opening since 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019. The film played in 4,500 theaters across North America, with premium large format and 3D screenings accounting for 35% of ticket sales.
Industry analysts attribute the success to strong nostalgia and family appeal. "This is a testament to the enduring power of the 'Toy Story' brand," said box office analyst Jeff Bock. "It's a phenomenal start."
With a production budget of $200 million, 'Toy Story 5' is well on its way to becoming one of the year's top earners.
