St. Patrick's High School presented a captivating performance of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, a musical that celebrates community, dreams, and the vibrant culture of Washington Heights. The production, part of the Cappies program, was a testament to the school's exceptional talent and dedication.
A Vibrant Community on Stage
The musical follows bodega owner Usnavi de la Vega and first-generation college student Nina Rosario as they navigate their aspirations amidst a colorful melting pot of neighbors. Over three days, the ensemble weaves heartfelt stories of belonging and ambition. St. Patrick's High School brought this world to life with infectious energy and polished production values.
Zion Bonilla-Gordon portrayed Usnavi with rhythmic command and charismatic vulnerability, seamlessly blending percussive lyrics with soulful passion. His performance in numbers like the opening title track and "Finale" anchored the show. Yami Workneh electrified as Vanessa, delivering powerhouse vocals and high-octane choreography that made her a standout.
Standout Performances
Yafeat Temesgen's portrayal of Nina Rosario was sensational, tackling academic stress and familial expectations with soothing melodic belting and expressive delivery. Her renditions of "Breathe" and "Alabanza" were richly layered. Amanda Mortel imbued Abuela Claudia with nurturing warmth, culminating in a show-stopping "Paciencia Y Fe". Ariana Guerra-Nguyen and Kalleigh McArthur thrived as the comedic duo Daniella and Carla, infusing witty remarks and dramatic physicality.
Choreography and Set Design
The choreography by The Bodega Bachatas blended merengue, contemporary breakdancing, salsa, and hip-hop, creating impressive formations in numbers like "In The Heights" and "Carnaval Del Barrio". The In The Set crew meticulously recreated community landmarks, including a hand-painted George Washington Bridge backdrop, the Esencia de Daniela salon, and the De La Vega Bodega. The Washington Lights department, led by Luca Spirito, enhanced the atmosphere with luminous effects from golden flashbacks to vibrant LED accents.
St. Patrick's High School's In the Heights was a love letter to Latin-American culture, offering a stunning depiction of humanity found in community. Through brilliant stagecraft and a kinetic ensemble, the show reminded audiences that home is not a location but the people who stand beside us when the lights go out.
