Born in Michigan, Tolkan moved to Chicago after his parents' divorce and later graduated from Amphitheater High School in Tucson, Arizona, in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War before relocating to New York City to pursue acting.
In New York, Tolkan studied under renowned acting coaches Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, honing his craft. He became a member of the original Broadway ensemble cast of Glengarry Glen Ross, showcasing his theatrical talent before transitioning to film.
