Sydney Sweeney's 'Christy' Goes from Box Office Flop to HBO Max Hit
'Christy' Flops in Theaters, Surges on HBO Max

Sydney Sweeney's sports biopic "Christy" initially flopped at the box office, but it has now become one of the top trending movies on HBO Max, according to the streaming service's public ranking system. Directed by David Michôd, the film recounts the real-life story of former boxing champion Christy Martin, portrayed by Sweeney.

Story of Christy Martin

The film follows Martin's rise to become the most successful female fighter of the 1990s, while also detailing the struggles she faced outside the ring. These include being misunderstood by her family due to her closeted personal life and enduring brutal abuse from her husband and trainer, James Martin, played by Ben Foster. James Martin nearly killed Christy in 2010.

The cast also includes Merritt Wever, Katy O'Brian, Ethan Embry, Coleman Pedigo, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, Tony Cavalero, Bill Kelly, and Bryan Hibbard.

Box Office Performance

"Christy" debuted in theaters on November 7 with a modest $1.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo. However, the following weekend saw a dramatic plunge to just $108,487. This drop ranks among the top 10 all-time worst openings for films on more than 2,000 screens and marks the steepest second-weekend decline on record, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Sydney Sweeney's Response

In response to the box office disappointment, Sweeney shared a since-deleted Instagram post, as reported by Variety. She wrote, "We don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact." She added, "And 'Christy' has been the most impactful project of my life."

"Christy" is now streaming on HBO Max.
