The legendary U.S. warship USS Hornet, docked in Alameda County, California, transforms into a lively furry camp for three days each year. This year, Galactic Camp runs from May 29 to 31 in the San Francisco Bay, offering a unique venue for attendees who dress in animal costumes, known as furries.
Historic Warship Becomes Furry Haven
According to the New York Post, the retired Naval ship, which famously defeated Japanese forces during World War II and recovered the Apollo 11 space capsule, now hosts furries at its summer convention. The event takes place within the ship's museum, which features a kill board listing dozens of downed WWII-era planes and served in combat during the Vietnam War.
Launched in 1943 as the successor to the sunken CV-8 USS Hornet, the ship was decommissioned after the Vietnam War in 1970. Today, it serves as a museum and event space.
Convention Activities and Pricing
Attendees at this year's convention can participate in a furry scavenger hunt, Uno for funny animals, trash panda trashy karaoke, and R-rated adult fursuit games involving risque themes and toys. Convention fees are structured at military-themed price levels: seaman for $80, petty officer for $150, and captain for $300.
Attendee Experiences
At last year's convention, one attendee wearing a baby blue deer head with yellow antlers referred to themselves as a transgen-deer in a video posted by YouTube channel Breaking Stories with Kyle and Zeo. An older man, a Vietnam veteran with furry ears, stated he is not a furry but loves the wonderful energy of furries.
The USS Hornet also hosts other events to fund its museum, including Carrier Con, an anime convention celebrating cosplay, tabletop gaming, and Western and Japanese media, held in March.
