Despite lingering winter weather, Regina's entertainment scene is blooming with springtime energy this weekend. Five major events offer residents diverse indoor activities, headlined by two beloved annual traditions that consistently attract large crowds.
1. Spring Celebration Powwow
The First Nations University of Canada presents the 47th annual powwow, running all day Saturday and Sunday at the Brandt Centre. Recognized as Western Canada's longest-running indoor powwow, this event has been celebrated as "one of Saskatchewan's most significant celebrations."
The powwow offers a rich cultural experience through traditional dance, song, and ceremony. Each year, the all-ages gathering draws thousands of spectators alongside more than 800 dancers and over 20 drum groups from across North America.
Participants will showcase various dance styles including fancy, traditional, jingle dress, and grass dance. Daily activities begin with an opening pipe ceremony at 8 a.m., followed by performances after Grand Entries at noon. An additional evening show occurs at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
An Indigenous trade show opens at 10 a.m. each day, providing artisans and vendors space to display their crafts and products.
2. Taste of Spring
Running Friday and Saturday nights at the Conexus Arts Centre, Taste of Spring invites patrons to "sip, sample and celebrate" the season's arrival. This popular annual event features adult beverages from international and local producers, complemented by food samples from Regina eateries.
Event organizers promise opportunities to "discover the newest spirits, ready-to-drink cocktails, and beers while exploring a vibrant lineup of food and food truck vendors." A special Beach Party Room offers relaxed atmosphere with seasonal drinks and springtime energy.
Whether attendees are cocktail enthusiasts, craft beverage fans, or simply seeking enjoyable social experiences, Taste of Spring provides welcoming entertainment for adults.
3. Mountain Film Festival
The 50th Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour arrives in Regina this weekend, presented by the Great Plains Section of the Alpine Club of Canada. Short film screenings occur Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. in Darke Hall, with an additional Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.
The festival showcases breathtaking cinematography capturing high-altitude adventures, personal transformations, and wilderness sports. Beyond film viewings, the event includes information booths, raffle draws, and opportunities to connect with local outdoor enthusiasts.
4. Kid Expo
Families with children can explore the Kid Expo, offering educational and entertaining activities for young attendees. This family-friendly event provides interactive experiences and resources for parents and children throughout the weekend.
5. Collectibles Show
Collectors and enthusiasts will find treasures at Regina's collectibles show, featuring various memorabilia, vintage items, and specialty goods from multiple vendors. This gathering offers opportunities to discover unique items and connect with fellow collectors.
Together, these five events create a vibrant weekend calendar that celebrates spring's arrival despite unpredictable weather conditions. From cultural traditions to culinary experiences, film adventures to family activities, Regina residents have multiple options for indoor entertainment.
