Montreal Jazz Festival's 46th Edition Unveils Star-Studded Lineup with Free Main Stage
The Montreal International Jazz Festival has officially revealed the complete schedule for its 46th annual celebration, scheduled to run from June 25 to July 4, 2026. This year's event promises an impressive roster of more than 350 performances, with a significant focus on free outdoor concerts that highlight both emerging talents and established artists.
Programming director Maurin Auxéméry emphasized the festival's core mission, stating, "The role of the jazz festival is to bring together communities. It's a kind of miracle, a big anomaly to have such a large festival with great artists performing for free outside for all tastes. Some people say it's not jazz, but there is jazz all over, everywhere."
Free Main Stage Highlights
As in previous years, over two-thirds of the festival's programming will be offered free of charge. The main TD Stage will host nightly showcases featuring a diverse array of musical acts. Notable performances include:
- June 25: Montreal folk-rock group the Barr Brothers, promoting their new album Let It Hiss
- June 26: Afro-British groove collective Kokoroko
- June 27: Quebec's buzz band Angine de Poitrine, a costumed jazz-funk duo
- June 29: Popular French-Haitian singer Naïka
- June 30: Willow Smith, daughter of Will Smith, performing tracks from her seventh album Petal Rock Black
- July 1: American blues-rock sister duo Larkin Poe
- July 2: Funky French-Palestinian singer Saint Levant
- July 3: Ethereal balladeer Patrick Watson, supporting last year's release Uh Oh
- July 4: Chicago rapper Smino
Auxéméry specifically highlighted Kokoroko as one of his favorite bands, noting their back-to-back performance on the festival's first Friday. He also mentioned revered British '70s funk outfit Cymande, which has been sampled by numerous hip-hop acts.
Centenary Tributes to Jazz Legends
The festival will honor the 100th birthdays of three iconic artists born in 1926: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Tony Bennett. Special tribute performances include:
- Marcus Miller, Davis's last musical director, performing on June 25 at the Maison symphonique
- Montreal trumpeter Ron Di Lauro paying homage to Davis on July 3 at the Gesù
- The Christine Jensen Sextet presenting Modes of Coltrane on July 1
- Multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier performing Coltrane's A Love Supreme on July 3
- American jazz singer-guitarist John Pizzarelli performing songs by Tony Bennett on July 3
Additional anniversary celebrations include a performance by DJ Jazzy Jeff at Club Soda, marking the 20th anniversary of J Dilla's classic album Donuts, and the premiere of the documentary UZEB en fusion, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Quebec jazz fusion group.
Contemporary Jazz and Beyond
The festival lineup also features several contemporary jazz acts, including:
- Cécile McLorin Salvant, described by Auxéméry as "one of the big voices of jazz"
- Saxophonist Joshua Redman
- Banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck with Edmar Castañeda and Antonio Sánchez
- Bassist Christian McBride with guitarist Julian Lage
Other notable performances include boundary-pushing American duo Domi and JD Beck at MTelus on July 2, and Herbie Hancock's famed jazz-funk band the Headhunters (minus Hancock) on June 25. Auxéméry expressed regret that Hancock himself could not be secured for this year's event.
MTelus will also host international acts such as Mexican singer Lila Downs, Argentine experimental rap duo Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso, Franco-Algerian singer-rapper Rilès, Father John Misty, and masked Swedish alt-fusion group Goat.
Auxéméry concluded with enthusiasm, "We have a big batting average this year. Rarely have we seen so many popular names on the main stage, and there are surprises everywhere. It's really good, quality programming. We're very excited by the lineup."
The 46th Montreal International Jazz Festival runs from June 25 through July 4, with full details available on the official festival website.
