The beloved Stanley Park Christmas Train will not be running this holiday season, leaving many families searching for a new festive tradition. The Vancouver attraction was abruptly shut down in December 2024 after a train operator fell ill from exhaust fumes. It remained closed for the Easter event and, in July 2025, officials confirmed it would stay closed for the rest of the year, casting doubt on its future.
Festive Train Adventures Around the Lower Mainland
For families with train enthusiasts, the good news is that several other magical holiday train experiences are chugging into towns across Metro Vancouver and beyond. From miniature rides through illuminated forests to full-scale vintage locomotive journeys, here are the top alternatives for a festive railway adventure.
Surrey's Enchanted Forest Ride
Head to Bear Creek Park in Surrey for a charming ride on the Bear Creek Christmas Train. This miniature train, pulled by Eddy the Engine, winds through a beautifully decorated and illuminated forest.
Daytime rides are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while night rides offer a extra sparkle from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. The experience also includes crafts, treats, and a photo opportunity with Santa. Keep an eye out for the Grinch, who may make a special appearance on the night trains.
The train operates from December 1 to 31, but will not run on the evening of December 24 or all day on December 25. Tickets are $12.50 per person, and children under two ride for free.
A Cross-Country Holiday Spectacle
The famous CPKC Holiday Train is making its way back to the Lower Mainland in December as part of a cross-country tour that begins in New Brunswick in mid-November.
While you can't ride this train, you can witness a spectacular show as the train, decked out in thousands of lights, pulls into the station. This year's event features a live performance by the Barenaked Ladies.
The train stops in Agassiz, Maple Ridge, and Pitt Meadows on December 19, followed by stops in Port Coquitlam and Port Moody on December 20. This is a fundraiser for local food banks, so attendees are encouraged to bring cash or food donations. Admission is free.
Christmas Magic in Chilliwack and Squamish
For those willing to venture a little further, two exceptional experiences await. In Chilliwack, the Greendale Express at Greendale Acres offers a train ride through a magical light display. It's one of many festive activities available.
Running from November 28 to December 23, the train ride costs $4 per person plus tax. While timed tickets are not required until December 12, it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance after that date.
Further up the Sea-to-Sky Highway, the Railway Museum of B.C. presents the North Pole Express. This is not a simple ride but a fully immersive 50-minute experience on restored CN coaches pulled by 1950s vintage locomotives.
Guests enjoy carol singing, cookies, candy canes, unlimited hot chocolate, marshmallows, and other entertainment. Tickets can be purchased for individual seats, or you can book an entire private coach for up to 14 people.
