The 99th edition of the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade commenced on a chilly Thursday morning in New York City, bringing a spectacle of giant balloons, vibrant floats, and star-studded performances to the streets of Manhattan.
New Balloons and Weather Challenges
The parade route began on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, culminating at the flagship Macy’s store on 34th Street at Herald Square. This year's aerial additions included the highly anticipated debuts of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and the classic video game character Pac-Man. The streets were also graced by new floats showcasing the popular characters Labubu and creations from Lego.
However, the festivities faced a challenge from the elements. According to David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York, temperatures were in the 40s Fahrenheit, but strong wind gusts between 25 mph (40 kph) and 30 mph (48 kph) made it feel significantly colder. City regulations prohibit Macy's from flying its full-size balloons if sustained winds exceed 23 mph (37 kph) or gusts surpass 35 mph (56 kph).
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that a decision on any necessary balloon adjustments would be made on Thursday morning based on the conditions. Historically, weather has grounded the balloons only once, in 1971.
Security and Performances Under the Spotlight
Commissioner Tisch also addressed security at a Wednesday news conference, stating there were no known, specific, credible threats to the parade. Nevertheless, thousands of police officers were deployed along the route as a standard precaution. The event has been a focus for protests in recent years, and police stated they were prepared to handle any situations that might arise.
The entertainment lineup was packed with talent, designed to dazzle the live and broadcast audiences. Performers included Cynthia Erivo from "Wicked," musicians Conan Gray, Lainey Wilson, Foreigner, and Lil Jon. A segment was also dedicated to the Netflix hit "KPop Demon Hunters," featuring performers Audrey Nuna, EJAE, and Rei Ami. The parade also featured the legendary Radio City Rockettes and cast members from Broadway productions like "Buena Vista Social Club."
A Grand Tradition Continues
Beyond the new additions, the parade featured dozens of other beloved elements, including the classic Tom Turkey float, the Spider-Man balloon, and the Dora the Explorer balloon. Other new balloons included a large onion carriage from "Shrek" and characters Derpy Tiger and Sussie from "KPop Demon Hunters". The procession of balloons, floats, clown groups, and marching bands all paved the way for the grand finale: the arrival of Santa Claus, officially heralding the start of the holiday season.
The event was broadcast live on NBC, hosted by Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Hoda Kotb, and was also simulcast on the Peacock streaming service. Spanish-language coverage was provided on Telemundo.
