A Historic Host and a Public Welcome

The levee presents a unique opportunity for the public to meet Lieutenant Governor Lakhani personally. Appointed in 2020, she holds the distinction of being the first Muslim lieutenant-governor in Canadian history. This open-house style event is free to attend and suitable for visitors of all ages.

"Hosting the New Year's Day Levee has always been my way of getting the year off to a good start," said Lakhani in a statement. "I always look forward to opening Government House to the public, meeting Albertans and exchanging best wishes for the New Year."

Event Highlights and Activities

Beyond the chance for a personal greeting and photo with the Lieutenant Governor, the levee offers several attractions. Guests can explore the building and view the beautiful art displays throughout Government House. The atmosphere will be enhanced by live musical performances.

A special community initiative will also be part of the day. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to write postcards to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are currently deployed overseas, offering messages of support and gratitude.

Logistics and Access for Attendees

The event will be held at Government House, located at 12845 – 102 Avenue in Edmonton. Organizers have confirmed that free, unlimited on-site parking will be available for those driving to the levee. The venue is wheelchair accessible, with access provided at the west side of the building.

Event organizers have issued a note regarding potential traffic delays due to the ongoing construction of the Wellington Bridge. They suggest that anyone planning to attend should plan their route accordingly to ensure a timely arrival.
