The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, located east of Edmonton, is set to reopen this Saturday, May 16, 2026, marking a significant milestone exactly one year after a devastating fire destroyed the iconic Silska Domiwka, also known as the red barn. The blaze, which occurred in May 2025, caused extensive damage to the historic structure, prompting an outpouring of support from the community and heritage advocates.
Rebuilding and Restoration Efforts
Over the past year, dedicated staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore the site. The Silska Domiwka has been rebuilt using traditional techniques and materials to maintain its historical authenticity. New exhibits have been curated to showcase Ukrainian Canadian heritage, including artifacts that were salvaged from the fire. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of the village and the resilience of the community.
Community Celebration
The reopening event will feature traditional Ukrainian music, dance performances, and food. Local officials and heritage leaders expressed excitement about welcoming guests back. “We’re excited to open our doors again and share our rich history with the public,” said a spokesperson for the village. The site will operate under regular hours, with enhanced safety measures in place.
The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is an open-air museum that preserves the history of Ukrainian settlers in Alberta. It attracts thousands of visitors annually and serves as an educational resource for schools and families.
