Toronto Saxophonist Dave McLaughlin Hosts Fundraiser for Hurricane Melissa Relief in Jamaica
On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa made a devastating landfall in Jamaica, marking a catastrophic event in the island nation's history. This Category-5 hurricane, with winds reaching 298 km/h and gusts up to a record 405 km/h, became the strongest ever to hit Jamaica. The storm resulted in 45 fatalities and inflicted nearly US$9 billion in damage, equivalent to 41% of Jamaica's annual GDP, leaving a trail of destruction across the country.
Widespread Devastation and Ongoing Challenges
The impact of Hurricane Melissa was profound and far-reaching. More than 150,000 homes were either destroyed or severely damaged, and two-thirds of the island's schools suffered significant harm. In the aftermath, a health-care crisis emerged due to stagnant water and compromised sanitation systems, exacerbating the challenges faced by affected communities.
While Jamaica's vital tourism industry, including up to 50% of its hotels, was heavily impacted—with Montego Bay experiencing particularly severe infrastructure and residential damage—recovery efforts are underway. However, severe problems persist in the western and southern parishes, highlighting the need for continued support and aid.
Dave McLaughlin's Humanitarian Response
In response to this crisis, world-class Toronto saxophonist Dave McLaughlin, who grew up in Montego Bay, is taking action. McLaughlin, who emigrated from Jamaica in 1991 and became a Canadian citizen, has a long history of philanthropy. For years, he has organized fundraising concerts to support post-secondary scholarships for financially needy students in the Greater Toronto Area and to combat poverty in both Canada and Jamaica.
Recently honored with an honorary doctorate from Faith Open Door Bible College, now known as "Dr. Dave McLaughlin," he is collaborating with two charities to deliver aid to Jamaica. These organizations are the YB Afraid Foundation in Jamaica, led by former world champion sprinter Yohan Blake, which provides homes for children in need, and the A-Supreme Foundation in Toronto.
Upcoming Fundraising Concert Details
McLaughlin will host a fundraising gospel concert in Scarborough this weekend to assist those most severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. This event marks his second relief effort for Jamaica, following an initial concert in November. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at the Scarborough Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 4350 Lawrence Ave. E., starting at 7 pm.
Tickets are priced at $30, and for more information, individuals can call 647-655-7811. McLaughlin will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event, bringing together the community to support a crucial cause.
This initiative underscores the ongoing need for humanitarian aid in Jamaica as the nation continues to rebuild from one of the most destructive hurricanes in its history.
