The Saint John Jewish Historical Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of preserving and sharing Jewish history in New Brunswick. Located at the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, the museum has served as a cultural hub and educational resource for the community.
A milestone for community heritage
Founded in 1986, the museum has amassed a collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents that chronicle the Jewish experience in Saint John and the surrounding region. The anniversary was marked by a special event at the synagogue, drawing community members and supporters.
“This museum is a testament to the resilience and contributions of the Jewish community in New Brunswick,” said a museum representative. “For 40 years, we have worked to ensure that these stories are not forgotten.”
Preserving a legacy
The museum’s collection includes items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Jewish immigrants settled in Saint John. Exhibits highlight their roles in local business, culture, and civic life. The museum also offers educational programs for schools and public tours.
According to museum officials, the anniversary celebration featured a retrospective exhibit and remarks from local leaders. The event underscored the museum’s role in fostering understanding and combating antisemitism.
Looking ahead
As the museum enters its fifth decade, plans include digitizing collections and expanding outreach. “We want to reach a wider audience and ensure that Jewish history remains accessible to all,” the representative added.
