A new historic plaque has been installed at Springbank Gardens in London, Ontario, honouring the legacy of the former Wonderland Gardens. The plaque was unveiled on June 21, 2026, during a ceremony attended by local officials and community members.
Plaque Commemorates Beloved Entertainment Venue
The plaque recognizes Wonderland Gardens, which operated from the 1920s until its closure in the 1990s. The venue hosted numerous events, including concerts, dances, and community gatherings, and was a cultural hub for the city. According to CTV London's Brent Lale, the plaque aims to preserve the memory of the site's historical significance.
Community Reaction and Historical Significance
Local historian and former Wonderland Gardens patron John Smith expressed appreciation for the recognition. "Wonderland Gardens was a cherished part of London's social life for generations," Smith said. "It's wonderful to see its legacy preserved for future visitors to Springbank Gardens." The plaque is part of a broader effort by the city to highlight historical landmarks.
The unveiling coincides with ongoing improvements to Springbank Gardens, a popular public park along the Thames River. The park already features other historical markers and recreational amenities.
