Manitoba RCMP are investigating a possible drowning incident in the remote community of Pukatawagan, located approximately 800 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg. The investigation was launched after a person was reported missing in the water on June 22, 2026.
Details of the Incident
According to RCMP spokesperson Corporal Julie Courchaine, emergency services received a call around 1:00 PM CDT reporting that an individual had entered the water and failed to resurface. First responders, including local police and search and rescue teams, were dispatched to the area near the Pukatawagan shoreline. The identity of the missing person has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Search efforts are ongoing, with RCMP divers and watercraft deployed to scour the waters. The local community has been asked to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to work safely. The RCMP has not confirmed whether the incident is being treated as a homicide or an accident, but foul play is not suspected at this time.
Community Impact
Pukatawagan, a First Nations community with a population of roughly 2,000, is no stranger to water-related tragedies. Local leaders have expressed concern over water safety, particularly during the summer months when residents and visitors frequently engage in boating and swimming. Chief Shirley Bighetty of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation urged caution, stating, "Our hearts go out to the family. We ask everyone to stay safe near the water."
The RCMP continues to investigate and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Pukatawagan RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
