Voice Actor Tom Kane Dies at 64, Voiced Yoda and Powerpuff Girls

Voice actor Tom Kane, renowned for his iconic roles as Professor Utonium in The Powerpuff Girls and Yoda in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, has passed away at the age of 64. According to TMZ, Kane died on Monday in a Kansas City hospital due to complications from a stroke he suffered in November 2020. The stroke left him unable to speak or write, leading to his retirement in 2021, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

A Legendary Career Cut Short

Kane's agent, Zahery McGinnis, shared a heartfelt statement with Entertainment Weekly, describing Kane as a “legendary voice actor whose work shaped the childhoods and imaginations of millions around the world.” McGinnis highlighted Kane's unforgettable performances in Star Wars, numerous animated series, documentaries, and video games, noting that he brought “wisdom, strength, humour, and heart to every role he touched.”

“His voice became part of our lives, our memories, and the stories we carry with us,” McGinnis said. “But beyond the incredible career was an extraordinary man. Tom was a devoted husband and father who, alongside his wife, built a loving family of nine children — three biological and six welcomed through adoption and fostering. That compassion and generosity defined who he was just as much as his remarkable talent did.”

Early Beginnings in Voice Acting

Born in Overland Park, Kansas, Kane launched his voice acting career at the age of 15 while attending Shawnee Mission South High School. In a 2010 interview, he recalled, “I started calling local advertisers and offered my services. It didn’t occur to me anyone got actually paid for it.” After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1984, Kane joined Lucasfilm, where he voiced minor roles in video games starting in 1996. He first voiced Yoda in a game in 1999.

Kane continued to lend his voice to Yoda in the 2003 animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars and the 2008 film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He also portrayed other beloved characters in the franchise, including Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett, and Qui-Gon Jinn, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Versatile Roles Across Animation

From 2016 to 2019, Kane voiced Professor Utonium and HIM in The Powerpuff Girls. His extensive resume also includes Darwin in The Wild Thornberrys, Mr. Herriman on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and Woodhouse on Archer. Additionally, he served as the voice of the Walt Disney World Monorail System in 2012 and announced several Academy Award broadcasts.

Kane is survived by his wife, Cindy, and their nine children. His agent concluded, “Though his voice may now be silent, the characters, stories, and love he gave to the world will live on forever. Rest in peace, Tom Kane. Thank you for everything. May the Force be with you, always.”
