Shatner Has Surgery After Horse Accident, Details Recovery

William Shatner Undergoes Shoulder Surgery Following Equestrian Mishap

The iconic Star Trek actor William Shatner has undergone surgical intervention after experiencing a serious horse riding accident last year. The 94-year-old entertainment legend revealed details about the incident and his subsequent recovery during his appearance at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films' 53rd annual Saturn Awards.

A Terrifying Fall from His Horse

Shatner, who is approaching his 95th birthday later this month, was accepting the Hall of Fame award on behalf of the beloved sci-fi franchise when he opened up about the equestrian accident that led to his recent surgery. "I ride the horses that can compete in equine skills, which is fast down and ends on a sliding stop," he explained. "And the horse that I owned, I came off."

The actor detailed how his horse had developed a problematic habit of veering slightly to the side during maneuvers, which ultimately caused him to fall from the animal. Despite attempting to use his stunt experience to minimize impact, Shatner suffered significant injury. "I'm not a young stuntman anymore," he admitted. "I started to roll, but hit the dirt with my shoulder. So I wrecked my shoulder."

Innovative Surgical Procedure

Shatner revealed that he underwent what he described as a "new type of shoulder operation called a reverse something or other" just days before the awards ceremony. He elaborated on the medical procedure: "You put the ball in the socket and the socket in the thing, and you come out 10 hours later and you're pain-free. So that's what I am meandering towards."

The actor confessed to feeling "old, tired and kind of hurt" following the accident, but expressed optimism about his recovery from the innovative surgical intervention.

Previous Health Challenges

This isn't the first health scare for the veteran actor in recent years. In September 2025, reports circulated that Shatner had suffered a medical emergency requiring hospitalization, but he quickly took to social media to reassure fans that rumors of his demise were "greatly exaggerated."

His agent clarified to media outlets that the actor had experienced "an issue with his blood sugar" while at home. Shatner himself confirmed this, stating "I over indulged" before thanking supporters for their concern and warning fans: "I keep telling you all: don't trust tabloids or AI!"

Longstanding Battle with Tinnitus

Shatner also discussed his decades-long struggle with tinnitus, a condition that began when he got too close to a special effects explosion during Star Trek filming, resulting in permanent hearing damage. "I've had many ups and downs with my tinnitus, and I know from firsthand experience just how difficult it can get," he shared while raising awareness for a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure.

The actor noted that the condition has worsened with age but maintained a philosophical perspective: "Sometimes it's really bad, but I know it's not going to kill me."

Despite these health challenges, Shatner continues to maintain an active lifestyle and public presence, demonstrating remarkable resilience as he approaches his mid-nineties.
