Ronny Chieng dedicated much of his “Daily Show” monologue on Tuesday to mercilessly mocking Donald Trump over the president’s intervention with FIFA to overturn U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s World Cup game suspension, only for the American team to be dumped out of the tournament by Belgium anyway.
Chieng’s Opening Salvo
“This is America, bitch,” joked Chieng. “The land of the Karen. And when life hands us lemons, we call life’s manager and say, ’Take these lemons back and let Balogun play.”
Later, Chieng said that “if you’re thinking this is corrupt, well, fuck yeah, it is.” “Because that’s America’s style of play. You think we’re going to obey soccer rules?” he asked, then zinging: “We don’t even listen to the Geneva Convention.”
From Heroes to Villains
Thanks to Trump, said Chieng, “we went from being the heroes of our own Disney sports movie to being the villain in some weird European film.”
