The world continues to be captivated by the genuine friendship between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, a bond that has remained strong for nearly three decades since they first met filming Titanic in 1997.
A Surprising Night at Leo's House
Recent revelations from actor Adam Shapiro provide fascinating insight into how close the two stars remain. During an appearance on the General Meeting with Becky Sloviter podcast, Shapiro shared an incredible story from the 2016 SAG Awards in Los Angeles.
After working together on the 2015 film Steve Jobs, Winslet suggested they and their partners get dinner together following the ceremony. When Shapiro offered to take her out, Winslet revealed she always stays with DiCaprio when she's in town and invited everyone to his house instead.
The timing made the situation even more remarkable - DiCaprio had just won Best Actor for The Revenant minutes earlier. Shapiro recalled his shock: "I'm like: 'We're going to Leo's house right now?' She's like: 'Yeah, he'll order food and we'll...' he'd just won Best Actor for The Revenant! Just minutes ago!"
The Goldfish Moment
What followed was an unexpectedly casual evening that demonstrated the down-to-earth nature of both stars. Concerned about arriving empty-handed, Shapiro and Winslet made a quick stop at a liquor store where Winslet went barefoot in her expensive gown and diamonds while Shapiro purchased scotch and, importantly, a bag of cheddar Goldfish because he was hungry.
The arrival at DiCaprio's home became memorable when Shapiro found himself handing the Hollywood icon the bag of Goldfish instead of the scotch. "I just gave him the Goldfish, and I just said: 'They're cheddar!' And he's like: 'Thank you! Thank you! Thanks, man!'" Shapiro recalled.
The group then enjoyed champagne and what Shapiro described as "the best night ever" at DiCaprio's impressive home.
A Friendship Built to Last
This casual comfort between Winslet and DiCaprio isn't surprising given their long history. Their friendship began when they starred as lovers Jack and Rose in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, then reunited onscreen for the 2008 movie Revolutionary Road.
DiCaprio even walked Winslet down the aisle at her 2012 wedding to Edward Abel Smith, demonstrating the depth of their connection.
Despite fan hopes for a romantic relationship, Winslet has consistently emphasized their purely platonic bond. As early as 1998, she told Rolling Stone that a romance would be "absolutely like incest," and reiterated this in 2014 interviews, noting "there was never any romantic thing" between them.
In a 2017 interview, Winslet reflected on their relationship: "I walked away with one of the greatest friendships of my life in my back pocket, which is Leo." She added that they still quote Titanic lines to each other and share private jokes that would surprise their fans.
DiCaprio has been equally complimentary, calling Winslet one of his "dearest friends" in a 2010 Esquire interview and emphasizing their "ultimate trust in each other."
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how much they value their connection, with Winslet revealing in 2021 that she "couldn't stop crying" when they finally reunited after three years apart, describing DiCaprio as "my friend, my really close friend. We're bonded for life."
