Clarington Man Faces Voyeurism and Exposure Charges Involving Minor
A 65-year-old man from Clarington, Ontario, has been arrested and charged with serious offences following an alleged incident at a Newcastle recreation centre earlier this month. The charges include secretly observing or recording a nude person and exposing genitals to a person under 16 years old for a sexual purpose.
Alleged Incident at Dianne Hamre Recreation Centre
According to Durham Regional Police, the incident occurred on April 9, 2026, between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. inside a male changeroom at the Dianne Hamre Recreation Centre on Rudell Rd. in Newcastle. Police reported that a male suspect allegedly pulled open a privacy curtain that was shielding a 12-year-old boy who was showering at the time.
The victim closed the curtain, but the suspect allegedly kept opening it repeatedly. After leaving the shower, the victim was allegedly followed by the suspect, who attempted to engage the youth in conversation. The minor then fled the changeroom and informed a waiting parent about the encounter.
Arrest and Charges
Eugene Gareau, 65, of Clarington, was arrested on Saturday, April 18, 2026. He has been formally charged with:
- Secretly observing or recording a nude person
- Exposing genitals to a person under 16 years old for a sexual purpose
Authorities have expressed concern that there may be additional victims related to this case. They are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Related Incident: Armed Robbery in Oshawa
In a separate but concurrent report, Durham Regional Police have charged four individuals following an armed robbery in Oshawa. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2026, around 6:30 p.m. in the Stevenson Rd. N. and Rossland Rd. W. area.
Police stated that a male victim was assaulted, had cash stolen, and was threatened with a firearm after being confronted by two people. Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and arrested three suspects as they exited a residence. A fourth suspect remained inside for several hours before being taken into custody.
No physical injuries were reported in the robbery. During a search of the residence, police seized four imitation firearms. The following individuals have been charged:
- Bailee Chircop, 24, of Whitby – charged with robbery
- Terry Woolner, 29, of Oshawa – charged with robbery with an offensive weapon and failure to comply with a release order
- Anthony Murray, 37, of no fixed address – charged with robbery, obstructing a peace officer, failure to comply with a probation order, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Cody Grose, 47, of Oshawa – charged with failure to comply with a release order
