Celebrate Mothers: Five Things to Do This Weekend in Saskatoon, May 8-10
Take in local art shows and sales, standup comedy, a disco dance party, and orchestral and choral music.
There are a variety of events and dedications celebrating and honouring mothers for their national day, along with entertainment for all ages.
1. Explore the Work of Local Artists
White Eagle Artists Association presents its annual art show and sale. Featured artists include Jola Kedra, Eric Swiatecki and Antoni L. Swiatecki. The event runs Friday to Sunday in the Auditorium of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish. An opening reception is Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. Learn more on Facebook.
Prairie River Artists present their annual show and sale. The works of 18 artists include multimedia, paintings, scratch art, resin work, and other artistic creations. There will also be live wood-carving demonstrations. The event runs Friday to Sunday at Grace-Westminster United Church. Learn more on Facebook.
2. Laugh Through the Weekend
Art Bar presents a weekend of live, standup comedy. All shows are limited to ages 19 and older. Learn more at artbartheatre.com/main-stage.
On Friday, take in a double-feature of comedy with Byron Bertram's Sergei Putinksi. Presented as 'Russia's only living comedian,' Putinski started as a side character and took on a life of his own. Shows are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
On Sunday, there are two chances to celebrate mom with comedy from Saskatchewan mothers, and one token dad. Comedians include Jenny Ryan, Jill Smith, Shannon Mallory, Paula Dott and Danny McKnight. Shows are at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
3. Catch the Disco Fever
Free Flow Dance Theatre and Better Off Duds present Boogie Nights III: A Disco Dance Party. Dress in your favourite disco-era outfit and bring a pair of dancing shoes to disco the night away with DJ Envaid and DJ Mixed Feelings.
The evening includes a free disco performance and dance lessons, awards for best dressed, a cash bar and snacks. Limited to ages 19 and older, the event is Saturday at Free Flow Dance Centre at 8 p.m. Learn more at freeflowdance.com.
4. Hear the Sounds of Spring
Saskatoon Philharmonic Orchestra presents Dancing Through Spring. Celebrate the season with dance-inspired music from a variety of musical traditions and eras. The evening features selections from Wicked by Stephen Schwartz, Dmitri Shostakovich's First Ballet Suite and Arturo Márquez's Danzón No. 2. Other highlights include composers Frederic Delius, Canada's Godfrey Ridout and Robert Planquette. Eclipse Chorus presents its spring concert, Trailblazers. The music selection is dedicated to the artists and people who have changed the musical landscape. Classic inspirations include Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Quincy Jones and Harry Belafonte. Modern inspiration includes Pink, Taylor Swift and Coldplay.
